CHAPTER 17

ANDERSON

Cheryl and I enjoyed breakfast before bundling up and trudging back out into the snow. The hotel courtyard was full of families with children building snow forts. I decided I would flex my fun muscle and impress her with a snowman. I started off with a snowball, rolling it through the powder to collect weight. Cheryl watched with fascination, so I stopped what I was doing to demonstrate.

“You start with a small snowball, like this.” I scooped up some more, packing it into a tight ball.

She followed suit, wearing her new coat and the gloves I had purchased. Her cheeks were pink with the cold, but she wasn’t shivering. I felt protective once again, as if she meant more to me than an evening’s conquest. I didn’t know where the relationship was going, or even if we had a relationship. It was more than likely that we would never see each other again, or if we did, it would be as polite strangers in the grocery store.

The thought of ending our tryst filled me with sadness, so I pushed it away. We were both here now, and that was all that mattered. I wasn’t going to obsess about the future or make plans I couldn’t stick to. Instead, I was going to enjoy her company right now, and teach her how to make a snowman.

“Now you roll it across the ground.” I pushed against my original lump, which had grown to the size of a basketball.

She nudged her little orange until it became a grapefruit and then a watermelon. “I’m getting the hang of this!” she crowed.

“Make sure to turn it every now and then,” I instructed. “Otherwise, you’ll end up with something flat.”

She nodded in concentration, turning her melon until it resembled a beach ball. I continued shoving mine, taking a dramatic left or right every ten steps, until I felt like I was pushing a boulder uphill. When it was about the size of a small barrel, I stopped.

I looked over at Cheryl. She was working her ball into a corner of the courtyard, having picked up enough snow for the middle section. I crossed the distance between us, crouching down to reach underneath her creation.

“Help me,” I said.

She bent to follow my lead, assuming half of the weight. We walked it across the courtyard and set it down on top of the base. I packed fresh snow around the snowman’s waist to secure its torso.

“Now we just need the head!” she cried, delighted with our progress.

She bent to work on the final piece, while I made a collection of snowballs. As soon as she determined that she had the right width for the head, she picked it up herself and walked it over to our sculpture. Placing it at the top, she stood back to survey her accomplishment. I used two of my snowballs to pack mortar into the seams, shoring the snow creature up.

The wind began to blow, and some of the mothers took their children inside.
